Australia’s box office gross for this weekend was up 3.2 per cent over last year, and the box office for next week is expected to be around $3.6bn.
But the biggest single winner of the week was the first-ever Australian film to win the Best Picture Oscar for director Thomas Tull, a movie that also earned the film an Oscar nomination for best foreign language film.
It’s an Oscar-nominated movie, which is something that most foreign-language films rarely get.
The Oscar has already been given to Tull’s movie The Salesman, which also won an Oscar nod.
Advertisement Tull is also the first Australian director to win an Oscar in the film categories.
The movie about a British salesman who moves to the US and takes a job as a sales assistant for an American businessman was the highest-grossing film in Australia in 2017, with $6.2m.
The Sales Man was also the highest grossing Australian film since 2007, when Australian director David Lynch’s The Elephant Man topped the charts.
The first Australian Oscar winner to win Best Picture was Australian filmmaker JK Rowling, who was nominated for her latest Harry Potter book, The Deathly Hallows Part 1.
Rowling won Best Original Screenplay for the story of the second film in the Harry Potter series, The Cursed Child, in 2010.
Rowling also won Best Adapted Screenplay in her film adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia.
The next best-selling film was an animated feature from the makers of the popular Disney Channel TV series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
The animated series premiered in October 2016 and earned more than $2.2bn.
The second best-seller on Netflix was a Netflix original movie called I, Tonya.
It earned $1.9m.
There were no other Australian movies to win Oscars this weekend.
This was the most successful year for the box-office in Australia since 2010, when there were seven Oscar nominations.
There have been no other winners since 2010.
This is also Australia’s first win for a Best Picture Academy Award for an Australian filmmaker, since Oscar winners Robert Rodriguez and Sam Mendes were nominated in 1994.
Rodriquez won Best Director for his film La La Land, which made more than the $4.5bn earned by Titanic.
The film also earned a Best Animated Feature Oscar nomination, which was voted on by fans.
The other Oscar nominees were David Fincher’s Birdman, directed by Luca Guadagnino, and David Lynch, who directed The Elephant Menace.
The best-known Australian movie was a musical about a teenage boy who becomes a magician in a school play.
It was produced by Australian actor Michael Fassbender, who won Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars in 2011 for his portrayal of the title character in the BBC television series The Sound of Music.
The musical was the sixth best-reviewed movie of the year, earning an average of 12.4 out of 20 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, the site’s review aggregator.
Australian film-makers are also nominated in other categories this year, with films like The Shape of Water, Birdman and The Shape Of Water 2 receiving Oscar nominations for best original screenplay and best cinematography respectively.
The nominations for the 2018 Oscars will be announced on January 20, 2018, and will be broadcast live on ABC TV.
